The Center for Health Intelligence: KFSHRC’s Arm for Innovating the Future of Healthcare

Riyadh 9 October

Amidst the global trend towards adopting Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies in the healthcare system, King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) took the lead early on by establishing the Centre for Healthcare Intelligence (CHI) in 2019. With its forward-looking vision, it has made significant strides towards the future of healthcare by creating an infrastructure and a comprehensive environment bolstered by a series of innovative applications of modern technology in the medical sector. This has led to tangible improvements in diagnostic accuracy, treatment outcomes, patient experience, and operational efficiency.

CHI’s achievements include the development of several AI applications and predictive models for various operational and clinical purposes, among them involves predicting outcomes for bone marrow transplants, using technology to identify patients at high risk of early complications and determining their eligibility for transplantation. Additionally, a machine learning-based predictive model has been developed to identify heart failure patients at high risk of hospital readmission, aimed at reducing readmission rates through preventive measures.

As a Platinum Sponsor at the Global Health Exhibition held in Riyadh from October 21-23, KFSHRC will showcase the latest advancements in generative AI technology, entirely developed by Saudi expertise. These initiatives are part of the hospital’s efforts to transform into a smarter healthcare facility, aligned with the Health Sector Transformation Program, one of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiatives to enhance the quality and efficiency of healthcare services.

The centre has also made significant progress in using AI to analyse medical images, such as CT scans, for assessing breast cancer risk over the next five years and evaluating the progression of pulmonary fibrosis in patients. This contributes to early disease diagnosis, guiding physicians to make treatment decisions based on the precise and comprehensive analysis of potential risks.

Recognizing the capabilities of generative AI in demand forecasting and big data analysis, KFSHRC has leveraged modern technology to streamline record review processes in the organ transplant clinic. By efficiently summarizing key data from patients’ historical medical records automatically, the system allows for rapid access to relevant information and effective decision-making. Additionally, healthcare practitioners can interact with data and inquire about patient conditions. The AI system at KFSHRC has been named “JuhAIna,” inspired by an Arabic reference to the bearer of certain news, symbolizing accuracy and reliability

It is noteworthy that KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 20th globally in the list of the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centres for the second consecutive year and recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, according to the 2024 Brand Finance rankings. Additionally, in the same year, it was ranked among the world’s best 250 hospitals and included in the list of the world’s best smart hospitals for 2025 by Newsweek magazine.
